Clash Between Two Terrorists Group In A Prison Leaves At Least 34 People Dead

According to a war monitor, at least 18 guards were murdered Thursday in a Daesh raid on a jail housing thousands of suspected terrorists in northeastern Syria, including members of the PKK terrorist group' s Syrian offshoot, the YPG. In addition, the ongoing skirmishes caused by the raid on the YPG- run prison have claimed the lives of at least 16 Daesh fighters.

According to the Britain- based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), the number of security forces and prison guards murdered has risen to 18, making it the largest such attack since the Daesh proto- state was proclaimed vanquished in 2019.

In an attempt to free some of the group' s members, Daesh terrorists detonated a car bomb near Ghwayran prison in Hassakeh province on Thursday and attacked YPG fighters defending the institution.

According to the SOHR, five Daesh detainees escaped, but it is unknown if they were killed or recaptured.

The coalition fighting Daesh, commanded by the United States, stated that " SDF casualties ensued during the attack, " referring to the YPG, the coalition' s Syrian partner.

The assault provoked battles between the Daesh members and United States- backed YPG fighters near the jail that persisted into Friday amid heightened security measures, the Observatory added.

Clashes are still taking place in the neighbourhood, according to Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman, who spoke to Agence France- Presse (AFP).

" At least six IS fighters have been killed in the clashes, " Abdel Rahman first stated, referring to Daesh by another moniker.

The YPG, which controls the jail, announced on Friday that it had " arrested two IS fighters that tried to escape from the Ghwayran prison" as part of its combing operations in the aftermath of the attack.

The YPG, which controls the jail, announced on Friday that it had " arrested two IS fighters that tried to escape from the Ghwayran prison" as part of the investigation into the incident.

The fanatics were captured in the neighbourhood of the jail, it claimed.

It was said that the Daesh fighters who carried out the attack were hidden in civilian homes in the al- Zuhoor neighbourhood near the jail.

" Exceptional security measures in the vicinity of the prison and surrounding neighbourhoods are ongoing, " the prison said in a statement released Friday morning.

Daesh fighters " are using civilians in the al- Zuhoor neighbourhood and areas north of the prison as human shields, " it added, adding that Daesh had killed some civilians in the area.

" Our forces and the relevant security services are moving with great precision and sensitivity to contain these incidents. "

Ghwayran is one of the largest camps hosting Daesh fighters in a semi- autonomous territory in northeast Syria controlled by YPG terrorists.

More than 50 nationalities are represented in a number of YPG- run jails, which today house over 12, 000 Daesh suspects.

Many of the Daesh prisoners' home countries, from France to Tunisia, have been reluctant to repatriate them, fearing a public backlash at home.

After Thursday' s attack, the US- led coalition warned Daesh " remains an existential threat in Syria and cannot be allowed to regenerate, "

" Coalition forces will continue to defend against and deter hostile activities against ourselves and our partners. "
